Carpinteria gets its name from the Spanish word which means carpentry shop. This is due to early Spanish explorers observing the building of tomols by the Chumash people near where Carpinteria state beach currently is. Carpinteria is home to a variety of marine wildlife including sea-lions, tide pool dwellers such as octopi and sea urchins, and many birds. The flora of Carpinteria is varied as well.
