Area Description

Summerland was founded in 1883 by developer and practicing spiritualist H.L. Williams. Then, in the 1890s oil drilling began with Summerland being home to the first offshore oil well. Oil production wouldn’t cease onshore until 1940, with offshore production lasting until the 1990s under Chevron’s supervision. Summerland is bordered by Montecito to the west and Carpinteria to the south east. Summerland’s climate is arguably some of the best in Santa Barbara County with average monthly temperatures not exceeding 71 degrees. Summerland’s residences are 52.7% owner occupied and 47.3% occupied by renters as of 2010.
